Beauty Battles #5: The Vamp Lip

How’s everyone feeling? I’m hoping well, why wouldn’t you be? It’s Friday!

If you know me, you would know that I’m all about my bright lipstick colours, pinks, reds, purples and the likes. More recently, I have been loving darker, more goth kind of colours. I guess I have been influenced by the Autumn/Winter colour trend but I see myself continuing in this dark lip journey beyond the season.
So today, I’m pitting two deliciously dark lipsticks against each other, as usual one’s kind to the pocket, the other, not so much.

MAC Hang Up

Hang Up was my first foray into dark lipsticks and I totally love it. Mac gets me when it comes to lipsticks, that’s for sure.

It is a dark berry shade with strong red undertones therefore it is easier to wear than the usual vamp lipstick. It is a nice way to transition from brights to darks because it does look more red than anything.

It’s a cremesheen which are usually the easiest lipsticks to wear from Mac as they are creamy and moisturising. It’s not very opaque though so you will need about three swipes for full coverage. I wore this lipstick out last week Friday and I didn’t touch it up once, quite impressive considering it’s not matte. I have been wearing it a whole lot since I got it, call it obsessive behaviour but when I like something, I don’t stop. It is also very day time appropriate because of it’s red undertones but I wear it more at night.

Mac lipsticks retail for £14.00, a little pricey. Not long ago they were £12.50, what happened?

Sleek True Colour Lipstick in Mulberry

I have either made you sick from always writing about Sleek and now you hate the brand OR you have gone out and bought all the Sleek makeup I have been raving about. Hopefully it’s the latter!

Mulberry is not for the faint hearted, I will tell you that much. It is a very dark purple/burgundy lipstick that leans very much towards black. If you have seen the new Bond movie, you may have noticed when Severine met up with Bond at the bar, she was wearing this sexy dark lipstick. I don’t know what brand that was but Mulberry seems like a pretty good dupe to me.

This lipstick indeed makes me feel like a Bond girl when I have it on(allow me :-))

As much as I like Sleek makeup, I’m not a big fan of their lipsticks because they never seem to offer me enough pigmentation. However I was pleasantly surprised with Mulberry, this lipstick packs a punch, goes opaque in about three swipes. The formula is also really nice to apply and has a sheen finish.

The only problem is that it is not long lasting at all. After about an hour, the colour begins to separate and fade around the inner lip area, annoying. So you’ll need to constantly touch up this lipstick to avoid the embarrassing inner lip fading.

You can get Sleek lipsticks for about N1300 at any Sleek store nationwide or on In the UK, they retail in Superdrug for around £4.99!

The Final Verdict

Hang Up

Length of Wear

As much as I love Sleek’s Mulberry, Mac’s Hang up wins this edition. It is more universal i.e easier to wear and will suit more skintones. It also beats Sleek on formula and length of wear.

Yup, my infamous crown is back 🙂

So what do you guys think? Which lipstick would you wear? The dangerously dark and gothic Mulberry or the more subtle Hang Up?

Peace and Love,

I love the dark lip trend! I actually really liked the look of Sleek Mulberry, and might be able to forgive it for not being super long lasting if the color looked good enough on my lips. Thanks to you, I know it exists! xx
