Review | Black Up Matifying Fluid Foundation

For over two years, I fuxxed with Revlon Colorstay Foundation in Caramel and my skin loved it, it was perfect…Until one day, my skin just revolted, it started looking orangey, patchy and streaky no matter how well I blended it. I finally accepted that my deep relationship with Revlon was over! 🙁 I don;t know if they changed the formula or if my skin tone changed but yeah #notwerking

So I have been on the hunt for a new foundation and it has been a struggle to say the least…I decided to chronicle this on the blog so first up is Black Up’s Matifying Fluid Foundation.

So I went into the Black Up store in the Palms because I had heard so many rave reviews about it. I got matched to the shade 07 and I went along my happy way….

What Black Up says about this foundation: “Historical reference of the brand, it keeps all its benefits: a fluid texture that stretches easily, a medium coverage that adapts to skin with blemishes and a very natural finish! Moreover, this new formula ensures an immediate matte effect. Enriched with sebum-regulating and astringent active ingredients it rebalances combination to oily skins, smooths and provides more comfort to the skin

I will keep it simple- I am not getting along well with this foundation at all! Here’s why-

  • I think the MUA matched me to a wrong shade because it still gives me that orange man look..Hate it!
  • It claims to be matifying but this product gives me more oil than I have on my face on a regular day
  • Black Up claims that the product is “Long lasting, the make-up remains bright and homogeneous all day long“..err no its not! On my face at least…By midday the foundation is all over the place
  • I find that the formula is a bit difficult to blend, it just doesn’t sink into the skin easily

More Pictures and Swatches

Swatched at the back of my hand

Blended in on the right

So yeah, this one is not for me I’m afraid. I know a lot of people, MUAs included who swear by this so maybe the wrong shade is the genesis of my problem with it but there are so many other things that don’t work for me so I’m not going to bother trying another shade.

Where to Buy and Price

Where: Black Up Stand in Montaigne Place in the Palms Mall, Lekki

Price: I think it was N7500

Can you guys recommend any good foundations I can try out? My hunt for the perfect one continues….

Peace and Love,

I am guessing it's your shade. The MUAS are fond of mixing the shades up. It took me 3 tries before I finally got my shade which is d 07. This foundation is simply the best. A lil pricey but worth every penny. I hope this helps

Hmm that's true about MUAs mixing shades…it's a bit too stressful for me..LOL! I just want one shade to work with…sigh

Thanks for the recommendations! Will research them. 🙂

You could try the blackup full coverage foundation. I find it blends a lot better than the mattifying fluid foundation and the colour match is a lot more accurate. Xoxo

Oh really? Ok will go in and have them try it on me. Thanks a lot!

I knowww, everyone says its amazing but it just doesn't work for me 🙁

wow! I had this on my "to try" list but I'm having second thoughts after this review. Lol Try Lancome Teinte Idole Ultra 24 hr, Maybelline matte + poreless foundation (this will accentuate any dryness or spot though…at least it does in my case) or good old studio fix
Funny my skin prefers the reformulated Revlon Colorstay and I find my shade isn't orangey as it was in the previous formula.
    Good luck with your search!

Try makeup forever HD foundation or NARS. Rave reviews on youtube and instagram

Please try Lancôme's teint Idole Ultra. Really amazing. I had mine bought from the UK and although mine's a shade too dark.. everything is alright when I apply my powder. Walked into the Montaigne store one day at the Palms and while chatting with the Lancôme girl, she mentioned 13 was too dark for they may be better at shade matching there.

If your foundation is too dark you can do like highlight and contour as to balance out your whole make up I had the same problem with a foundation I purchased

I absolutely agree with your review, this looks like the first negative review I would be seeing in my extensive search. Thank you because I was beginning to think the problem is my face and my skin. I bought the pressed powder first but I was given a totally wrong shade for light skinned. You see I am dark and still baffles me how the MUA could have made that mistake and they wouldn't take it back, almost wept, bought it for 8,300. However, because of the hype, I decided to go for the matifying liquid foundation. It is a great wear for me but it doesn't last for than than an hour on my really oily face. So disappointed, anyway I have never had much luck with makeups so I prefer to leave my face bear most times, but don't like the look anymore because of the oil and acne marks. So I would love if I can get a honest review on Iman oil-blotting pressed powder. Wanna give it a try, but I'm working on a budget

Dearest, it is advisable to always go to the stores with your current make up brand, so it will be easier for you as an individual to match the shade. Those attendants can mislead buyers most times.

I tried Maybelline Fit me today. I have mad shine on my face after some hours under Ac. I was looking for a full coverage makeup without the need for concealer. This will not be my every makeup

I was looking at 6 or 7 in the mattifying fluid … Revlon I wear Caramel for Oily/Combination and in MAC a mix of NW43 with a little NC45 or sometimes little NC50 (just NW43 in summer or NW43 w/ a tiny bit of NC50 in summer).
