Over 20 years ago, when the makeup industry had zero consideration for women of color, Black Opal was created as a brand focused specifically on promoting the unique beauty of black skin. Over the years, they have released hundreds of products many of which are loved by black women the world over, myself inclusive.
So when I received an email inviting me to the relaunch of Black Opal in Nigeria, I was really excited! The brand had decided to evolve to a more modern name, logo and packaging. In a world where abbreviations have become the norm, the brand name is now BLK/OPL. It’s still the brand you know and love but just a little edgier 🙂
Here are some of the new products that have been launched with this re-branding effort…
TRUE COLOR PORE PERFECTING POWDER FOUNDATION
This is a creme foundation that dries to a powder finish, so no need to top with a setting powder. I feel like Black Opal has always made really great creme foundation products and this is no different. I tried it out yesterday and it applied really well, blended easily and provided decent coverage. It also lasted through the day without any touch-ups needed so I think this will be great for oily skin.
The shade Beautiful Bronze was workable for me but it came up a tad bit orange. I looked on the site and Truly Topaz looks like it has yellow undertones so might be a better shade match for me, so I’m going to try to pick that up.
The pineapple is out to play and I’m smiling 😁 🍍 I’m wearing the new BLK/OPL Pore Perfecting Powder Foundation in Beautiful Bronze 💁🏾♀️ Blends like a dream with medium coverage, great for that natural, everyday look 👌🏾 A blog post sharing other products from the newly rebranded BLK/OPL will be up later this week ❤️
TRUE COLOR ULTRA MATTE FOUNDATION POWDER
So the first product is powder foundation and this is foundation powder, got me kinda confused. However, this foundation powder is basically a powder that can be applied with a wet sponge to offer some more coverage.
I was not able to try this out because Medium Deep is too dark for me but it swatched really well, the finish is nice and smooth. It will be perfect for those powder only days where you just want a bit of an even tone without actual coverage.
TRUE COLOR SOFT VELVET FINISHING POWDER
This is a loose finishing powder to set allover foundation or under-eye concealer. It feels really smooth to touch and because this is a dark shade, I will probably use it to set creme contour.
COLOR SPLURGE COLOR STICK LIP
These are similar to Clinique’s “Chubby Sticks”- lip pencils that can also be used as a lipstick. These come in a variety of beautiful shades with a satin, shiny finish so they are not as pigmented. If you want to wear them alone as lipstick, you will have to apply several swipes for full coverage. However, they work really well as lip pencils or as a base for colored lip gloss.
PRICING AND WHERE TO BUY
The creme foundations and powders are all N4,000 and the lip products are N2,800. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they are so affordable.
You can shop BLK/OPL products at the official retailer in Nigeria, Kuddy Cosmetics.
